Managing your suit: 6 simple rules

A well-made suit lasts longer with the right care.

  1. Rest it a day

Wear a suit one day, then let it rest the next.

  2. Iron through a cloth

Always place a cloth between the iron and the suit.

  3. Treat stains immediately

Whatever the stain, removing it straight away is the best method.

  4. Dry-clean wool

    Dry-clean wool whenever possible.

  5. Watch for mould and moths

Keep suits away from damp and pests.

  6. Hang it up

Store suits on a hanger whenever possible.

Through the seasons

In summer, let a suit air in a ventilated spot before putting it back in the wardrobe so moisture does not stay in the cloth. In winter, brush heavier wool suits after wearing to lift dust and reduce shine. Before storing a suit for the season, have it cleaned, make sure it is fully dry, and hang it in a breathable cover.

Hangers and storage

Use a wide, shaped hanger that matches the width of the jacket's shoulders so the shoulder line keeps its form. Hang trousers by the hem with the crease lined up to reduce knee bagging, and empty the pockets — a wallet or phone left in will pull the cloth out of shape.

How often to clean

Wool suits do better with brushing and airing after each wear than with frequent dry cleaning. Dry-clean when there is a stain or before seasonal storage. Rotating two suits rather than wearing one every day gives the fabric time to recover.
